Event Description
The ACTnet Asia‑Pacific Regional TB Journal Club was held on Tuesday 16 June at 1:00 pm and featured guest speaker Dr Emma Smith.
Dr Emma Smith was an infectious diseases physician at Royal Darwin Hospital. She completed her training in the UK and had extensive international experience, including work in sub‑Saharan Africa. At the time, she was undertaking a PhD at the Menzies School of Health Research, focusing on transforming tuberculosis care in remote Aboriginal communities.
During the session, Emma discussed the following paper:
Three Months of Weekly Rifapentine and Isoniazid Versus Four Months of Daily Rifampicin for Tuberculosis Infection: A Randomized Controlled Trial
https://academic.oup.com/cid/advance-article/doi/10.1093/cid/ciag306/8678684
Emma examined whether a weekly 3‑month rifapentine–isoniazid regimen (3HP), supported by SMS reminders, led to higher treatment completion compared with a 4‑month daily rifampicin regimen (4RIF), and considered how the two approaches compared in terms of safety and effectiveness in improving adherence.
